Consider for a moment, Shelly (a midwife) supporting a routine birth. Things changed rapidly, substantial complications occurred, the baby stopped breathing and an emergency forceps delivery occurred. Shelly was supporting the mother throughout the birth, the baby arrived, he was having difficulty breathing, was very blue and immediately rushed to ICU leaving Shelly caring for an inconsolable mother, and father. Then an upset and angry extended family.
Shelly, doing her best, was then called to another birth and back to the ward. By the end of her shift, the mother was asleep.
